A "Shimeji" is a cute desktop companion you can download for a variety of characters--now including Koishi Komeiji! Click this link to be redirected to my itch.io page where you can download a zip file that contains all of the Koishi you will need. Please remember to feed her.
If you have Windows, you can download the shimeji-ee program here. Extract the zip file and open the folder. Look for another folder named "img" and open it--here, you should see a pre-existing folder named "Shimeji" filled with many images of the default shimeji character. Open the "Koishimeji.zip" file you downloaded from my itch.io page and extract the "Koishimeji" folder into this location. Now, you should have two folders side-by-side to eachother: "Koishimeji" and "Shimeji."
Return to the folder with the executable file "Shimeji-ee.jar" and run it. Koishi will not appear by default--the gay ass little white dude will instead. Look towards the bottom right side of your screen, where you usually see your battery, volume, and Wi-Fi icons. This is where you can find your system tray. Look for the Shimeji-ee.jar icon, which should appear similar to a white square. Right click this icon and go to Settings. Then, select "Choose Shimeji." A new menu will pop up, and you will be able to select Koishi there.
If you have any issues during this process, such as errors messages, go to the official website to read the FAQ and watch the video tutorial.
Even if you hate government agents, psychiatrists, and proprietary garbage, you can still get your own Koishimeji! Try downloading Shijima if you use Linux or macOS. Go onto the page and download the version for your operating system. After extracting the files, run the executable program (Shijima-QT). A menu will pop up, and you will want to select the "File" option from the top. You will see the new option to "Import Shimeji" which you will click, and then select my downloadable Koishimeji.zip file. You don't need or want to extract this zip file--Shijima will do the work for you. Afterwards, things should work fine and you should be able to invite Koishi onto your desktop!
Word of advice: Shijima is not supported on Linux desktop environments besides GNOME 46 and KDE Plasma 6. Koishi can still appear on your computer, but she cannot do cute things like this 🔽
Also, in my personal experience, I wouldn't suggest letting your computer screen suspend while running Shijima-QT if you are not on those aforementioned desktop enviroments...I've had a bad experience with it and now I refuse to leave my Koishimeji unattended.
I have always loved Shimejis ever since I was a little girl, scouring through the pixiv tag to find ones of my favorite characters. There's always been a few Touhou shimeji's, but most have been rather lackluster in my personal opinion; the majority of them have been shimejis made out of sprite-rips from the official games, which aren't made to be cute desktop pets--and it shows. Surprisingly, it seems like the shimeji "fad" (if there ever was one) is already over, meaning nobody really cares about them anymore unless they are really special in some way. Shimeji aren't the sort of desktop pets you can dress up, fed, or even pet--and giving them any kind of special custom actions requires Javascript coding. In other words, it has very limited appeal and a small market.
Still, making a Koishi Shimeji has been on my mind for over a year now. The first prototype was a small sketch I did on paper below and then transferred over to digital; I actually don't draw a lot of chibi-type characters, and so my first instinct when struggling to draw something like this is to always chart it out on traditional paper and pencil first. After transferring over the digital image, I moved onto the next phase: Shimeji Hell.
Maybe you think making these cute little things is easy, especially because you reuse a lot of the same body parts, like the face, over and over again...Wrong! At least not at first. I have a strong hatred for that gay ass white guy all Shimeji programs come default with because, for starters, 1) He's a terrible mascot, and 2) It does an absolutely terrible job as a default, base sprite.
As an example, all Shimejis come with a behavior where they get very quirky at night, and decide to randomly pounce onto one of your windows, grab it, and throw it away off-screen. The issue is one part of your Shimeji's face is supposed to be "behind" the window, so that part needs to be erased. Take a lot at this Koishimeji to the side, where it looks like half of her face has been cut off. You have to draw it like that, or else the animation won't make sense--the issue being the default Shimeji mascot does not convey how much of the head needs to be erased or where, so you are left to figure it out by yourself. This seems small, but I think it's one of the many reasons why so many artists do not bother making Shimejis anymore. If you want this program to succeed, you need to make things clear, simple, and easy to begin for the illustrator.

Anyways, I experimented with an older design before deciding to make a new one since I wasn't quite happy with it. I used minimal shading for my Koishimeji since I felt like small rendering details wouldn't register well at such small sizes, and I ended up liking the simple look better. I struggled with the animation of Koishi climbing up the side of the screen--this one is re-used as she climbs up windows, and it looks a hell of a lot better there than it does for it's original purpose. Funnily enough, there's an animation for Koishi rolling her eyes/head that goes completely unused as far as I can tell. I struggled a lot with the sprites of her climbing on the "ceiling," since the sprite cut-off is garbage and cannot be configured...it's supposed to look like she's dangling from above with her third eye cord attached to the ceiling, but I don't think it reads too well.
Finally, you have the Shimeji multiplication animations where the Shimeji multiply through meiosis and crazy methods like that...I'm really happy with how these turned out and I think I had great ideas for them, but why are they so annoying! You can't change how fast the animation plays at all!
At first I started with the animation of Koishi answering a phone call when a suspicious shadow starts to form behind her. After getting all the sprites done I decided to test it out, and found that it was incomprehensible because of how fast the animation was. Thankfully the second animation for Shimeji multiplication plays a lot slower, or else I would have had to scrap that idea entirely.
